7th Annual Meeting CEN-CENELEC in Krakow

It was also attended by delegations from EU applicant countries and EU neighbors that are a part of European Neighbourhood Policy and Eastern Partnership. Furthermore, among participants there were also the representatives of European Commission and EFTA Secretariat, as well as delegates of other European organizations and trade associations. The presence of distinguished guests, such as Daniel Calleja Crespo, the Deputy Director of DG Enterprise and Industry of the European Commission,  and Krzysztof Galas, the Deputy of the Department of Economic Regulations of the Ministry of Economy made this event even more renowned and outstanding.

The honor to host this Meeting was given to the Polish Committee for Standardization (PKN) – a Member of CEN and CENELEC. The fact that the Honorary Patronage over this event was taken by Mr. Waldemar Pawlak, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, and Mr. Jacek Majchrowski, the Mayor of the city of Krakow underlines the significance of and solemn character of this session.

It has been this year’s most important event for European standardization. Moreover, it was also intertwined and interconnected with the forthcoming Polish Presidency in European Union.

There was a number of statutory meetings where delegates had the opportunity to discuss key matters of the two organizations. However, the climax of the Annual Meeting was the Open Assembly of CEN-CENELEC Communities that was dedicated to innovation and its relationship with standardization.

The venue chosen for this event, Collegium Novum of the Jagiellonian University, contributed sublime atmosphere to this exquisite Meeting.

His Magnificence Professor Karol Musioł, Rector of the Jagiellonian University, welcomed the guests. In his speech, he has also highlighted that it is the universities that create openness of future generations towards innovation.  

Representatives of European politics, science, industry and standardization took part in a debate during the Open Assembly. It resulted in a conclusion that the dialogue between these parties on the topics connected with innovation and standardization is fundamental and essential, and that it contributes to raising awareness and broadening knowledge that can be widely applicable in many walks of life.

In his letter to Mr. Tomasz Schweitzer, the President of the Polish Committee for Standardization, the Deputy Prime Minister Pawlak stated:

“Standards constitute inherent and effective complements to Community regulations that allow to develop and examine safe industrial products. Contemporary standardization activities are not only aiming at satisfying the needs of consumers and businesses, but they are also focused on innovation, improvement of the environment and handling waste from equipment, machinery and appliances”.

Both participants and organizers found the 7th Annual Meeting of CEN-CENELEC highly successful. Decisions taken during this meeting will have a significant effect on the future of the European Standardization System (ESS).
